Tentmaking
It is estimated that over 80 percent of the world's population live in 'closed' countries where traditional missionaries are not welcome; and this number continues to grow. The Arab Muslim world, where so many have never heard the gospel, is part of this statistic. With such a huge task, what are the possibilities of reaching Muslims of the Arab world for Christ?One solution is for Christians to use their secular skills and training to enter restricted countries and following the model of the Apostle Paul (Acts 18:3) live, work and share their faith with those around them. "Tentmaker" is the name often given to a missionary in this type of cross-cultural ministry. They have been called by God, prepared for service, and have a secular identity in the land in which they serve. The Arab world needs Christian tentmakers.
Opportunities exist across North Africa, the Middle East and the Arabian Peninsula, especially if you have professional or vocational skills. For example, there are openings for teachers, engineers and nurses, and also for those with backgrounds in subjects as diverse as agriculture, tourism or business management. Even without professional qualifications, there are many ways in which you can be involved.
Being a tentmaker is often the only way to achieve long-term residency in the Arab world; but there are also other advantages. Through tentmaking you can establish natural contacts with those around you, whether they be work colleagues or students you teach. By building relationships you will develop insight into how others think, and feel better equipped when it comes to sharing the Gospel. Other benefits include job satisfaction and a salary - which helps with financial support.
